Estancia San Jose, a 24,000-acre ranch welcomes anglers to fish 12 miles of both banks of the upper Rio Grande. The main ranch house was used primarily as a vacation home for the owner who welcomed his family and select guests while limiting access to the public. That all changed in 2022. Now, up to 4 anglers can enjoy this private home complete with single rooms, 2 veteran guides, a chef and additional staff. In fact, it’s that exact same staff that the wealth owner has employed for many years. Guests will experience the same 5 star service as other lodges on the river but without the price tag that comes with the glitz and glamour. The reviews so far have given high marks to the little know lodge on a world-famous river and now only those booking early will find space.

Sea Run Browns reach the estancia by mid-January but the bulk of them arrive sometime in February. By March this stretch of water is full of fish. Any angler hesitant to fish these upper portions should remember that 20+ lbs and chromed sea trout are still caught even farther upstream then Estancia San Jose. The ranch’s section of the Rio Grande is narrower and shallower than the lower portions of the river. This means that the sloppy, chuck n’ duck two handed casts that are effective on the lower river can and should be avoided. A good cast and soft fly presentations with a single hand rod are what’s required at San Jose to achieve the same catch rates as on the lower portions. Lighter rods, lighter lines and smaller flies are the ticket.

Guest should plan to fly from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. From Ushuaia, the lodge staff picks you up and drives you 3 hours to the lodge. Guests will probably fly back to Buenos Aires from the Rio Grande Airport.
