Dorado fishing at Pira Lodge takes place in one of the planet’s largest ecological preserves. This fishery welcomes both fly and light tackle anglers and is divided in two parts: the lush and wild Ibera Marsh and the Corriente River. The intricate marsh is a vast system of crystal-clear creeks, rivers, sandy shallows, vegetated lined channels and lagoons. It’s “floating grass islands” are always shifting, making the marsh truly alive and dynamic. Big Dorado annually push into this skinny-water utopia. Here, we typically fish from Hell’s Bay skiffs, one angler at a time, although great wade-fishing opportunities are everywhere. The stunning Corriente River is perfect for stripping streamers and mice from the banks. Exciting sight fishing opportunities are constant in both the marsh and the river. Dorado average 6 lbs., but fish in the teens are caught weekly. Last season´s biggest dorado weighed in at 27.5 lbs.. We fish a variety of flies from mouse and saltwater patterns to large deceivers.
Iberá Marsh
Comparable in size to Yellowstone Park, the Iberá Wetlands is a breathtakingly massive wetland located in north east Argentina. The Iberá is a critically important freshwater reserve for the region and also acts as a spawning ground for Golden Dorado and other fish. It is also a sanctuary to more than 350 bird species, as well as to deer, capybara and caiman. The Iberá Reserve is so large and so remote that there are reportedly over 100 indigenous subsistence-living families in the marsh, where they live peacefully and secretively in huts, and little is known about their hidden lives in this blue and green jewel of endless marshland.
Corriente River
The Corriente River drains the Ibera marshlands and flows roughly 300 km to empty into the Parana River at the town of Esquina. Anglers at Pira Lodge will fish only the very headwaters of the Corrientes where the flows are still clear, relatively narrow and shallow and the environs are still pristine. From flats boats, swinging streamers is a deadly technique and when levels rise, small side channels offer wading opportunities with mouse patterns.
