Argentina Dove Hunting

ARGENTINA DOVE HUNTING

Halfway through the morning of dove hunting, Harry Robertson, said, “Jesus Christ, look at all the doves, it’s ridiculous!
This was coming from a 70 year young veteran of hosting and guiding dove hunting trips around Central and South America. Needless to say, we passed his test with flying doves- millions of them.

Our hunts are what the Argentina dove hunting dream is all about. Doves and pigeons fly continuously all day over corn, sorghum, rice, soy bean and wheat fields. With access to several ranches and thousands of acres, we have an endless, year round selection of recently harvest and rested dove fields.

Great father & son trip!

The fields we’ve selected offer hunters the once in a life time opportunity to shoot over 600 times a day. Note this number is conservative; many guests shoot over 1000 shells per day, and some pass 1500. While specific numbers are not important, averages are. We don’t claim to have the most doves in Argentina, but we can guaranty you have more than you’ll want or need.

All birds not used by hunters and ranch hands are consumed by locals.

The Argentina dove hunting season is open year round for the Eared Dove Zenaida Auriculata and two pigeon species, Columbia Maculosa and Columbia Picazuro.

Argentina dove hunting would not be complete without a mid day asado in the field. From under the tree canopy, watch the birds fly by in peace while you enjoy a well cooked barbeque and Argentina’s finest libations. A well earned siesta becomes natural and almost irresistible.

ARGENTINA DUCK HUNTING

Argentina Duck Hunting

This corner of the World is renowned for the quantity and diversity of its waterfowl. So much so that a vast area surrounding the confluence of the Corriente and the Parana Rivers was declared an ecological reserve by the Corrientes Province. We hunt on the boundary of this reserve where it’s no surprise to see thousands upon thousands of ducks in a single morning.

Our duck hunts take place on private ranch lagoons as well as several locations along the Corriente River. Our professional Argentina duck hunting guides will set up either new blinds or refresh old ones in rested areas. Our guides grew up hunting here and are skillful duck callers. In fact, one guide uses only his hands and mouth while another still works wonders with a call he hand made years ago.

Argentina Duck Hunting at La Pelada
Liberal limits on ducks

"I just want to say thanks for everything! The trip truly was the trip of a lifetime. Oscar would always say he has good news and bad news. Well I've got good new and bad news. The good news is the trip exceeded our expectations; the bad news is it was so good it would be impossible to ever repeat!
It was a great trip and it's nice to have the DVD as a memory. Thanks a lot! The trip was a real eye opening experience for my son, so much so that he changed his college major to Spanish and International Business. He's already planning on a semester abroad in Argentina!"
Greg Johnson, San Diego, CA

You'll see multiple duck species in the spread at a given time. Of the over 25 different Argentina ducks found here, some common species are the Rosy-Billed Pochard Netta peposaca, Brazilian Duck, Amazonetta brasiliensis, Silver Teal, Anas versicolor, White-faced Tree Duck, Dendrocygna viduata, Black Bellied Tree Duck, Dendrocygna autumnalis, Fulvous Tree Duck, Dendrocygna bicolor and the White Cheeked Pintail, Anas bahamensis.

There is a wide range of Argentina duck hunting limits between the different regions. Our daily bag limit is 25 ducks per gun which our guests feel this more than sufficient. Practically every day hunters get the chance to limit out and our best shooters frequently do. We fully respect all Argentina duck hunting regulations and encourage our competitors to do the same.

ARGENTINA PERDIZ HUNTING

25,000 private acres on La Pelada Ranch
Argentina Perdiz Hunting

Perdiz is arguably the most thrilling upland game bird and the largest population is Argentina is found right here in Corrientes. On our exclusive estancias, we hunt highly productive fields where you may see 20 Perdiz in an afternoon.

Perdiz hunts will usually follow a morning duck hunt and a fine lunch. Two hunters will access immense private grasslands accompanied by one guide and dog. Hunters should use lightweight boots and it’s always a good idea to use blaze orange. We recommend a 20 gauge for hunting the Argentine Perdiz, but welcome the classic 16 gauge as well.

Nothura maculosa

Like its distant cousin the ostrich, the Perdiz or Spotted Tinamou, is a fast runner but also a fast flier. It’s a bit larger than a Bob-white Quail and has similar colors as a female pheasant. When threaten, the Perdiz will either lie still with its head low or will discreetly flee on foot. Normally the Perdiz will only take to the air with the presence of a dog. A flush will produce one or two birds and be low and fast. It can also be heart stopping when if comes from only a few feet away! Our Brittany’s and pointers are the best in the area and will significantly enhance your hunting experience. In the last year, we had one guest offer $13,500.00 for our finest pointer. We wouldn't see her double that amount.

Duck and dove hunters will find this species to be an unforgettable addition to their Argentina hunting experience.

Lodging

ARGENTINA HUNTING LODGES

Estancia La Pelada

Fly Fishing Patagonia uses 3 ranches or lodges depending on our guests interests.

Perhaps the most impressive is Estancia La Pelada, where we have exclusive use of the lodge and it’s 25,000 sq acres. This elegant ranch is located on the Corriente River, 35 kilometers north of the small town of Esquina in the province of Corrientes. The fully staffed Spanish-Colonial home was built 50 years ago and operates as both a traditional Argentina hunting lodge as well as a family ranch. Meals are cooked in the traditional Argentine fashion which includes specialty meats and fruits from the region and are complimented by fine wines from Mendoza.

The estancia hosts eight guests in elegant, European-style rooms, all with private baths. Guests enjoy fine hunting, fishing, bird watching and horseback riding. The riverside pool and veranda offer a view of the Corrientes River and grounds.

For groups larger than 8 persons, we will use our sister lodge, Hambare, located just outside Esquina.

The third ranch we use is located in the northwestern corner of Entre Rios Province. This is a prime location for fast access to multiple dove fields.

Non-Shooting Activites

Polo Lessons at La Pelada
Wildlife tours

Our non-hunting guests will find an endless variety of activities from spa services to bird watching. All the estancias we frequent offer horseback riding on miles of soft grasslands. Bird watchers will enjoy a day with our bilingual guide Marcelo Gianecchini. Marcelo is an avid birder and wildlife painter and will identify almost all birds and other wildlife seen. He also takes guests via horseback, horse buggy or jeep on nature tours, viewing capybara, caiman rhea birds and countless other species.

Touring historic downtown Esquina

The lodge offers pools and verandas which look out over the Corriente River and offer total peace and relaxation. The owner of the La Pelada will happily give polo lesions to any quest wishing to try their hand at one of Argentina’s most difficult and long standing traditions.

Tours of downtown Esquina catch the attention of any historian and daily visits to some of the areas classic ranches introduce guests to the culture and hospitality of old Argentina.

TRAVEL

Air Travel and Arrival: Traveling to Argentina is safe and easier than flying to Europe because of similar time zones. At the Buenos Aires International Airport, our representative can meet you after you have cleared customs. If you are carrying a gun, you can request to have our representative accompany you to the RENAR police office to assist with fast and easy registration of your firearm. Our representative will then transfer you to your hotel. We will put you in direct contact with our representative who will advise you of the cost of the transfers and with whom you may also arrange for city tours, guided shopping, tango shows, etc..

Gun Entry Procedures: See complete instructions.

Travel to the lodge: Guest will either charter a plane from Buenos Aires to the lodge or take one of the many commercial flights from Buenos Aires to Corrientes. We will meet you at the Corrientes Airport and transfer you to the lodge. The Santa Fe Airport can also be used as an alternative. If required, we can also arrange to pick you up at the Buenos Aires international airport and drive you 7 hours to the lodge in a comfortable 8-19 passenger van. Contact us for more details on charter flights.

Cheapest way to get there: You can save hundreds by taking a bus from Buenos Aires to Esquina. Although very easy and safe, this style of travel is not for everyone. The bus's in Argentina are luxurious compared to Grey Hound stardards in the US. They have large seats which fold back into a bed and serve meals and drinks. Guests will depart the Buenos Aires bus terminal at about 10:30 pm and arrive in Esquina at 6:00 am. We will meet you at the terminal in Esquina and take you to the lodge.

Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is always wise to purchase when traveling extensively. Fly Fishing Patagonia highly recommends that travel insurance is purchased by all visitors. We can supply you with a specialized insurance plan and give you a quote immediately. For more details contact us. Please note that although Argentina and Chile are safe countries and your hosts take every precaution necessary to ensure your well being, unexpected events do happen. Most people use travel insurance to cover travel upsets such as delayed or canceled flights, lost luggage and medical emergencies. All medications you might want or require should be brought with you. You can be further prepared by buying complete travel insurance that includes medical evacuations.

Travel Documents: No immunizations or visas are required to visit Argentina, just a current passport.

Heath Issues: There are no immunizations required for entry into Argentina. For the latest information on health and immunization requirements worldwide, you may visit the Center for Disease Control web-site at www.cdc.gov. Bring any required medications and basic first aid supplies. Although your guides will have epinephrine pins and are trained to use them, we advise carrying a personal epi pin if you are allergic to any kind of insect sting.

Communication: Some lodges have internet access. Cell phones work near major towns.

Electric current: The current is 220v and the sockets are for two round prongs.

Money: The Argentine money is the peso. Personal purchases can be made with cash pesos, dollars or credit cards. Currency exchange houses and banks will exchange your dollars. Some merchants offer discounts for cash. Personal or travelers checks should not be used. Also ATM's are sometimes out of US dollars, so plan accordingly.

Attire: Slacks and collared shirt for Buenos Aires and jeans and a fleece for Corrientes.

Gun Entry Procedures: See complete instructions.
