CONDOR WATCHING

Our most popular and rewarding educational journey is a day bird watching and learning about the Andean condors with our friend, Dr. Lorenzo Sympson in Bariloche, Argentina. You can read more about this excursion on our Educational Journeys page.

Lorenzo is perhaps the most well known naturalist and leading ornithologist in Patagonia. He is head of the Condor Project in Argentina for the University of California at Santa Cruz . This project studies the ill understood Andean Condor with hopes of reestablishing populations of California Condors in the southwestern USA. Lorenzo is a founding member of the Andean Patagonia Naturalist Society in Bariloche, an organization comprised of local experts in ecology, biology and other natural sciences that works with local governments and citizens to educated and preserve natural resources.

A day with Lorenzo includes a morning and afternoon walk or horseback ride to observe condors and other birds in the Nahuel Huapi National Park or on private ranches in the Bariloche area. A traditional Argentina asado is enjoyed at lunch where Lorenzo will share with you his British ancestry, his days working as a veterinarian in Peru, managing large ranches in Patagonia or perhaps his life as a polo player.

RIDING TRIPS

The Estancia Fortin Chacabuco offers one of the best horseback riding trips in all of Patagonia. You may choose to go for an hours ride or partake in a multi-day pack trip through the foothills of the Andes, rediscovering the trails and traditions of the ancient Indians and gauchos. Managers, Ricki and Alistair will explain the dynamics of sheep ranching with wild boar and the protected pumas in the area. The Estancia Fortin Chacabuco was the first ranch in Argentina to produce a genetically superior sheep for both wool and meat.

GUIDED SIGHTSEEING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

All Patagonia fishing lodges have easy access to trails for hiking and horseback riding, as well as endless photographic opportunities with waterfalls, glaciers and surrounding wildlife.
You can read more about our exclusive excursions on our Educational Journeys page.

The rare Arrayanes Forest

For guests who wish to organize there own daily activities in the are, Bariloche has a ski lift that takes sightseers to the top of Cathedral Mountain and the famous Llao Llao Hotel and Arelauquen have great golf courses. On the Nahuel Huapi Lake there are a variety of half or full day excursions. These may include half and full day trips to walk through rare and ancient forests and to visit waterfalls. You can also float cross the Andes Mountain to find yourself in Chile. These trips anyone can arrange by themselves, however you will not have a friendly English speaking Argentine to accompany you. Our eco-tour professional Argentine guides are extremely knowledgeable and we strongly encourage you to use them.

For those that wish to immerse themselves in the cultural side of Patagonia, Argentina, many old estancias welcome visitors and the local towns are rich with museums and elegant shops.

A popular afternoon activity is to drive the rough roads of the mountains west of Bariloche, Argentina. We climb aboard our guides Land Rover Defender to take a closer look at the flora and fauna of the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Our bilingual guides are native to the area, specialize in either botany or zoology and will acquaint you with the endemic species of the area. From high up on the mountain they will describe the geology and geography of the surrounding area. Andean Condors are a common site in the higher attitudes of this area.
