ABOUT BARILOCHE & SAN MARTIN

Mountain Chapel outside Bariloche

The town of Bariloche, Argentina is located at the foothills of the Andes Mountains in the province of Rio Negro. It lies approximately 85 miles northeast of Puerto Mont, Chile and 1100 miles southwest of Buenos Aires. Bariloche can be compared to several tourist mountain towns in the US like Jackson Hole, Wyoming or Vail, Colorado. It overlooks the 250 square mile Nahuel Huapi Lake. Surrounding the town is a 1.9 million acre National Park also called Nahuel Huapi. The lake and park provide picturesque views and an abundance of outdoor activities year round. The Swiss and German influences are apparent as one explores the streets with elegant shops and fine hotels.

Although Bariloche is one of the largest cities in Northern Patagonia, Argentina, it still has a small town feel. The downtown area is pedestrian friendly and locals greeting each other is a common site. The new and modern Bariloche Airport is one of towns greatest assets with multiple daily flights to and from Buenos Aires and other cities.

San Martin

San Martin is located in the Lanin National Park 125 miles north of Bariloche. It is nestled on Lake Lácar and surrounded by the high mountains of Patagonia’s Lake District. It is considered the tourism capital of the Neuquen province with its picturesque views, numerous outdoor activities and sophisticated Swiss Alpine architecture. This charming mountain town of less than 20,000 has undergone substantial yet controlled and tasteful growth in the last 10 years.

L
ODGES IN BARILOCHE

One of the many advantages guests enjoy with Fly Fishing Patagonia is that we are not bound to any lodge. Instead, we have picked our favorite in the Nahuel Huapi National Park and Bariloche area and can customize the perfect trip for a individual or large group. We have listed information on our recommended lodges below. Contact us for further details on the lodges in this area.

ESTANCIA PEUMA HUE

The Estancia Peuma Hue, located in the heart of the Nahuel Huapi National Park offers the finest and most unique accommodations in the area. It is a magnificent structure with its beautiful wood and stone architecture and incredible view from every window. The owners have built this premium lodge with the intention of creating a place where nature is preserved and enjoyed with their guests, family and friends.

The main home holds 10 guests with a separate house accommodating six guests in a more private setting. Each bedroom is creatively decorated with sky lights in the bathrooms, huge cipres tree trunks or stones inlayed in bed boards. All the furniture was built on site.

Two additional buildings on the property are a multi-religious chapel and a secluded log cabin high on the mountain. The chapel is small and tastefully done. It has two chimneys, a huge diamond front window, a bolder as an alter and a hanging piece of obsidian that rings out a clear high tone when tapped. The mountain cabin holds 4 people and may or may not include all services from the main lodge. It is superb for a couple of anglers on their honeymoon! It is one of our favorite places to stay and will be yours as well. Guest enjoy outdoor activities such as lake kayaking, biking, horseback riding trekking and tango dancing. Tango lessons are made easy by Peuma Hues patient instructors and X number of glasses of Malbec.

Bird watching has become increasing popular at Peuma Hue Lodge. Please request to see our bird list made by ornithologist, Clara Coen. These were only a few of the species she identified on her short stay in Oct. 2003. Bird watchers staying at Peuma Hue may go out in to the Coihue forest alone or with a naturalist or ornithologist.

For our group containing no-anglers or guests interested in our Educational Journeys in Patagonia, we recommend staying at this location. It is close enough to access the fascinating people and resources of the Bariloche and the surrounding area yet borders prime fishing location such as the Manso River, Hess and Fonck Lake.

Fly Fishing Patagonia guests are welcome to enjoy classical concerts in the chapel, wine tasting in the mountain cabin and massages in your private room at a small extra charge.

RIO MANSO LODGE

Rio Manso Lodge

This is the newest upscale, facility in the Nahuel Huapi National Park and surrounding area that caters mostly to fly anglers. It is located 90 minutes south of Bariloche overlooking the Hess Lake. We recommend any groups with non-anglers who enjoy diverse activities stay at the Peuma Hue Lodge.

All the amenities and comforts are what the international angler expects. The lodge can hold 16 guests in 8 rooms but has a rod limit of 8. Four of the main rooms have king size beds and Jacuzzis. Two rooms have one full size bed each and the last 2 have two twin beds each. All have private bathrooms, are nicely furnished and look out at the Lake Hess and Tronador Mountain. The lobby is comprised of a large living room with stone fireplace, a full bar and fly tying bench.

Rio Manso Lodge Fireplace

Off towards the main entrance there is separate room to remove and hang wet waders plus a small fly shop stocked with any necessary items including rods and reels. Internet and phone services are also available. The meals are prepared by a professional chef and are as fine those served in the best restaurants in Argentina.

The fishing takes place on the Manso River and the Hess, Fonck, Moscos and Mascardi Lakes. Rainbow, brown and brook trout are caught in almost all water accessed from the lodge. Larger fish are mostly caught in the lakes. The major advantage to this full service lodge is the close proximity to the all waters fished.

ESTANCIA FORTIN CHACABUCO
Enjoying a Lamb asado

The Estancia Fortin Chacabuco, is located 30 minutes north of Bariloche still within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. The estancia offers 8 private miles of the famous Limay River. The ranch captures the flavor of historical estancias in Patagonia and still operates similarly to the way large ranches were run years ago raising sheep, cattle and horses.
The lodge also offers perhaps the finest horseback riding trips in the area. The lodge is also popular with hunters seeking red deer during the fall. Cast and blast opportunities arise in March and April.

What further completes this rustic ranch is its reputation of it's delicious lamb asados or barbeque. Cordero al cruz or lamb on the cross, is slowly cooked on an iron cross which is leaned over the heat of an open fire.. The estancia is well known in Patagonia for producing a breed of sheep that produces both great tasting meat and high quality wool. Before Fortin Chacabuco produced this hybrid, the ranches of Patagonia were required to cultivate two different sheep if they wished to sell to both the meat and wool markets.

Exceptional horse back rides at FCH Ranch

Rickie is one of the estancia mangers. He is in charge of everything from preparing the asados, guiding horseback rides, attending to guests and overseeing estancia projects. In the fall months, he guides red deer hunts. He is a charming gentleman and cooks a fantastic lamb asado that one never forgets. Previous guests sometimes comment on the big trout they caught, but they never fail to mention the lamb asado prepared by Rickie.

ESTANCIA QUEMQUEMTREU - Refined traditional ranch
Paula Zimmermann
and Tamara Eddy

Located south of Junin de los Andes, the estancia employs about 25 gauchos and 10 in-house workers to run farm and guest operations. Your hosts, Paula and Martin Zimmermann ensure that the customs of old Argentina estancias are as unaltered as the Patagonia frontier. Anglers, hunters and polo players from around the world quickly realize a refined informality at Estancia Quemquemtreu that allows them to relax and be as they would in their own home.

The Quemquemtreu stream flows close to the estancia and offers great Argentina dry fly fishing. This creek flows into the nearby and more famous Collon Cura River. The "Collon" is a large river well known for its quality and quantity of large rainbow and brown trout, its ease of fishing.

The Patagonia estancia has both fishing and hunting lodges, each having a capacity for 10 guests. All visitors enjoy the bar and showroom to enjoy cocktails before or after dinner. Family style meals are served with all natural meats, vegetable and other foods produced organically on the farm. Non-anglers take advantage of the long days with playing or watching a polo match or horseback rides and hikes to see wildlife such as red deer, rhea birds, condors and wild boar. They are also welcome to become involved in everyday farm life such as riding with the gauchos, milking or rounding up cattle. In addition, the estancia is a paradise for children who wish to play with the children of the lodge staff. Children under 12 are admitted free.

Quemquemtreu has become one of our guests’ favorite places to be in northern Patagonia. The authenticity and genuine people replace what some might seek in glitz and glamour, but leave us with a connection to a country that feels more like a friend.
