At the heart of this trout territory is the Alerces National Park located between Cholila and Esquel Argentina. Created in 1937, this 2,630 sq kilometer park holds precious old growth temperate rain forests and a chain of lakes and rivers that attract anglers and tourists from around the globe. The most famous rivers are the Rivadavia, Arrayanes and Menendez.

Esquel is small pueblo of about 30,000 inhabitants located 30 minutes outside Alerces National Park. The town's economy is based on agriculture but mostly tourism. Travelers usually stop in Esquel to ride the old fashion narrow track railroad train or visit the Welsh community of Trevelin. The small ski resort also attracts visitors but the dry, harsh environment is not conducive to substantial snow falls.
