TROUT FISHING: Argentina - Junin

Estancia San Huberto

Lodge Common Room ReduxEstancia San Huberto Lodge is one of the most requested Argentina fishing lodges in northern Patagonia.  The 25,000 acre San Huberto ranch is located 25 minutes north of Junín de Los Andes and is owned and operated by Carmen and Carlos Olsen and the Olsen family. Like all Argentines, the Olsen family finds it second nature to greet you warmly and assure your expectations are exceeded everyday. They have turned what used to be a hunting lodge for deer and wild boar into a renowned Argentina fly fishing lodge as well, offering 16.5 private miles the Malleo River plus 6 private miles of the Huaca Mamuil tributary.

Estancia San Huberto Lodge offer cast and blast opportunities for stag and trout  from mid March to mid April.   The ranch manages their stags to ensure trophy deer and a high success rate. Stag hunts at San Huberto lodge are usually sold out a year in advance.

This private Argentina Fishing Lodge has 6 rooms with twin or double beds, holding a max of 12 guests. The spacious living room is open with high ceilings and a center fire place creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Estancia San Huberto Lodge is one of our favorite ranches not only because of the superior fishing on the Malleo River, but also because the staff treats our guests like special friends. We guide a large portion of our anglers out of this ranch but we can accommodate only those that book a year in advance.  All our guests that stay with us here have wanted to rebook the following year.  Be sure to ask us what other destinations and lodges couple well with a stay at San Huberto.

The main asset to guests at San Huberto Lodge is the 16.5 mile stretch of the Malleo River, accessible only to San Huberto guests. The head waters of the Malleo lie in the Lanin National Park and it flows west until it enters the Aluminé River. With its superior insect hatches throughout the season, it has the reputation for the finest dry fly river in all of Patagonia. It is a walk and wade only, blue ribbon trout stream, where anglers will spend much of their time casting flies upstream to rising fish.

The Malleo River starts at Tromen Lake and then runs swiftly through ravines, along high banks and over boulders. The wading is difficult to moderate and suited for adventurers. In the middle section the waters are slow and meandering, providing a less challenging and equally rewarding experience. The beautiful pools and cut banks beg for a hopper.  Since floating is not permitted, we’ll travel up and down the river in our trucks, stopping to wade the best sections. High water in November and December allows great rainbow fishing on the 6 private miles of the Huaca Mamuil tributary. Tromen Lake also offers excellent dry fly fishing for 18-28 inch browns, rainbows and brook trout.
