TROUT FISHING: Chile - Puelo

Waters

fishing the pueloPuelo River
The large, freestone Puelo River, offers great Chile trout fishing for  Rainbow and Brown trout.  In Jnauary we encounter some Coho Salmon and from mide February to late April King Salmon are plentiful.  Directly in front of the lodge has some of the best fly fishing for the Puelo River’s signature fish which are large football shaped rainbows.  With the river being only 10 miles long and feeding into the ocean, the amount of nutrients available to fish is enormous.  Rainbows are so numerous and healthy that even sea lions come up from the estuary to feed on them.  (Don’t be alarmed when a 6 foot shadow swims under the boat).

Nano and clientJPGJet boats and drift boats allow us to navigate every inch of the pristine, emerald colored Puelo River.  After a few days fly fishing the main Puelo, anglers are invited to journey up river to the Tagua Tagua Lake and access the upper sections for the Puelo River and the lower Manso River for even more exclusive Chile trout fishing waters.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of the Puelo River is its excellent dry fly fishing.  While most places in Chile demand a streamer, the Puelo River has some superb action on the surface using stimulators and foam patterns.  Sinking lines and streamers are still a deadly combination, however, the Puelo gives anglers the ability to pick up a five weight and cast a dry fly.
