Fish the Salmon Fly Hatch !

with  FFP’s Alex Plaza & Justi Campa

at the South Fork Lodge in Idaho – June 22-28, 2014!

We are headed back to Natural Retreats South Fork Lodge June 22-28, 2014 to fish the Salmon fly hatch! Our trip this June will be 6 nights and 5 days of fishing.  In the middle of the week, we will spend one night at their deluxe overnight river camp, just to add a little adventure and more time on the water.  Download the itinerary to share with friends!

We are targeting the Salmon Fly Hatch which is by far, the most exciting trout fishing in the lower 48. These are 2.5-3 inch long stoneflies making them one of the largest aquatic insects in North America.  The dry flies used to imitate them are equally big and have a similar large wings and bright orange belly. Salmon flies spend three years developing on the river bed, then crawl to shore as a nymph where they dry, arduously shed their nymphal shuck and fully develop into sexually mature adults. After mating, the eggladen adults fly to the river’s surface to lay their eggs, providing an irresistible meal for trout.

What makes fishing the hatch so exciting is that big trout don’t waste time on small meals so it’s the larger fish that are aggressively smacking these mini helicopters off the water!

There are never any guarantees as to when the salmon fly hatch will start but we will be there when they are expected!

Fishing the South Fork – We will be fishing the upper, lower and the canyon sections of the South Fork of the Snake River. The South Fork is well known as an amazing Cutthroat, Rainbow and  trophy Brown Trout fishery with heavy insect activity almost the entire year. It is certainly one of the best rivers in America to fish the Salmon fly hatch.  It boasts the largest Bald Eagle nesting area in the lower 48, the largest cotton wood forest in the country, sheer basalt walls and dramatic rock formations, waterfalls and braided channels.

The Lodge- The South Fork Lodge has a rustic elegance that leaves guests feeling relaxed, warm and very comfortable. The suites in the main lodge have two double beds, with high ceilings, a mini bar, terracotta and stone tiled spacious bathrooms and a great view of the river.  The dining room also has a high ceiling and a 180 degree view of the river.  Guests enjoy Wi-Fi in each room and lobby, a 24 concierge service, a smiling staff and a fire pit and bar to relax after a great day on the water.

See lots of photos of the facilities and river here!

Food!  The Riverside Bar and Grill has a seasonal menu with local dishes including Grilled Rocky Mountain Bison Ribeye, Prime Center Cut Filet Mignon, Smoked Trout Chowder and Slow-roasted Pork Prime Rib with Crimini Mushrooms.  Their breakfast menu has a variety of delicious and unique dishes that will leave you satisfied until lunch. (Our two favorite dishes were the yogurt parfait and the sushi roll!)
