TROUT FISHING: Argentina - Wilderness Expeditions

Expedition X

Exp X 10Somewhere in Patagonia, Argentina, there’s a river where you can catch trout like those in Tierra de Fuego’s Rio Grande.  Like many Patagonia rivers, it’s clear waters run along willow lined banks, around islands and through side channels and long pools.  But here, the fish are bountiful and big…really big.  It’s a place where you could be easily under gunned with a 6 weight.

Introducing, Expedition X, our Argentina overnight fishing trip that offers the greatest chance of landing multiple trout in the 3-6 pound range and several in the 8 pound range.  We would not be surprised to hook into something as large as 15 pounds.   Perhaps we should call it Jurassic River.

Exp X 3When we make the trek out here, it’s for big fish.  Expedition X  is hard core fishing and only serious anglers need apply.  Beginning at day light and ending at night fall, our Argentina fishing guides will have anglers on the water 12 hour a day (14 hours if you skip a siesta).  We’ll be getting down and dirty on Expedition X, with our ugliest streamer patters, wading the best pools or fishing from the boat.

January and February offer sight fishing opportunities as these fish feel safer in the higher water and the insect activity keeps them feeding.  Dries and nymphs will account for 18-20 inch browns and rainbows, while the larger trophy fish are most often taken with streamers. We will teach you our unique and proven techniques for enticing these larger fish to strike.

Exp X 17Anglers should have two rods ready on the boat, one 6 wt with a dry line for smaller fish, and one 7 wt with a 200-250 grain, sink tip, shooting line for larger brown trout.  Anglers will be well served with a two handed rod equipped with full floating line and a second line with interchangeable heads.  Although our fly fishing guide will have extra rods, it’s always a good idea to bring a back up.  A full fly list will be provided.

Our Expedition X trip starts from Bariloche or San Martin.  We’ll spend 3 nights camping on the river and fish 4 full days.  These trips are run like our other Argentina overnight fishing trips with camp assistants, a chef preparing our meals and a baggage boat that carries all our equipment.  Our angler’s responsibilities are fishing, eating, drinking and maybe some sleeping.
