TROUT FISHING: Argentina - Bariloche

Estancia Fortin Chacabuco

104_0469Estancia Fortin Chacabuco is located 10 minutes north of Bariloche within the Nahuel Huapi National park. The rustic  ranch sits on 25,000 acres that supports sheep, cattle and horses. The ranch’s main focus, however, is running a guest ranch for anglers, red stag hunters and horseback riders.  Fortin Chacabuco offers anglers  fast access to the ranches 8 private miles of the Limay River.  This 8 mile section offers the most productive fishing on the river, especially when the lakes’ Brown Trout enter the river to spawn in April. Fly Fishing Patagonia has been managing access to these precious 8 miles for several years.

Estancia Fortin Chacabuco has only 3 bedrooms supporting 6 guests total.  They only allow one party to occupy the ranch at a time to insure a private experience and personal attention.  This rustic Patagonia fishing lodge is an ideal and inexpensive option for anglers preferring fast and private access to fishing over high-end accommodations.

What further completes this traditional ranch is its reputation for its delicious lamb asados.  Cordero a la cruz or lamb on the cross, is slowly cooked on an iron cross which is leaned over the heat of an open fire. The estancia is recognized in Patagonia for producing a breed of sheep that has both great tasting meat and high quality wool. Before Fortin Chacabuco produced this hybrid, the ranches of Patagonia had to cultivate two different sheep if they wished to sell to both the meat and wool markets.

Every year the ranch hosts deer hunters from mid March to mid April. Reservations for this time must be made 8 months to a year in advance.

Wade fishingFishing at Fortin Chacabuco
The large Limay River borders a portion of Estancia Fortin Chacabuco and is the main water guests fish.  We float 3 different sections and walk and wade the ranches 8 private river miles. The Limay River is especially good in November and December for 20 inch rainbows and then again in April and May for big browns that come out of the Nahuel Huapi Lake to spawn. The Limay is a great river for double handed rods.

The small Pichi Leufu is located about an hour southeast of the ranch and offers excellent dry fly fishing. We do all walk and wade trips on the “Pichi” from November to mid March. The other waters we fish from Fortin Chacabuco are the Manso River and its surrounding lakes.
