TROUT FISHING: Chile - Puelo

At Fly Fishing Patagonia, we create custom-tailored fishing packages that usually incorporate rivers and lodges from different areas.  This unique approach ensures that your experience won’t be the same as the previous anglers.  It allows our guests to experience a great deal more of Patagonia’s environment, trout waters and culture than if they were to book a week at one lodge.  Therefore, some itineraries below may combine lodges or rivers in Chile and Argentina.

Posada Puelo

7 nights at the Posada Puelo
6 days fishing

Day 1
Anglers will fly into Puerto Montt, from Santiago de Chile.  We will greet you and transfer you 3 hours via car and boat to the lodge. After a quick tour and snack, we’ll fish until dark.

Day 2
Fish the Puelo River below the lodge with drift boats.  The Puelo has a healthy rainbow population, which are like heavy chrome footballs.

Day 3
After a short boat ride upriver, we’ll arrive to where the Puelo River leaves Tagua Tagua Lake.  We’ll fish the lake, the boca and drift back down the Puelo.

Day 4
Fish the lower Puelo River.

Day 5
Fish the Puelo River above the lodge in drift boats, finishing up at the lodge.

Day 6
Today we’ll take a breath taking journey upriver beyond Puelo Lake to reach the Manso and Traidor Rivers.  These tributaries also have fishable feeder streams and we’ll be fishing them using light rods and dries.

Day 7
Fish the Petrohue River.

Day 8
Depart the lodge for the Puerto Montt Airport.

Chile – Argentina Combo
Posada Puelo and a Wilderness Expedition

10 nights, 8 days fishing

Day 1
Fly into the Puerto Montt Airport from Santiago, Chile.   We will greet you and transfer you 3 hours via car and boat to the lodge. Quick tour and snack.  Fish the mighty Puelo River until dark.

Day 2
Fish the Puelo River below the lodge with drift boats.  The Puelo has a healthy rainbow population, which are like heavy chrome footballs.

Day 3
After a short boat ride upriver, we’ll arrive to where the Puelo River leaves Tagua Tagua Lake.  We’ll fish the lake, the boca and drift back down the Puelo.

Day 4
Today we’ll take a breath taking journey upriver beyond Puelo Lake to reach the Manso and Traidor  Rivers.  These tributaries also have fishable feeder streams and we’ll be using light rods and dries.

Day 5

Day 6
Drive 6 hours over the Andes to Bariloche, Argentina.  (Guests may choose to take the lake crossing via bus and boat which takes about 8 hours).  Bariloche hotel check-in.  Dinner in town.

Day 7
At 9:00am we’ll pick you up and drive 2 hours to the Caleufu River or the Collon Cura River to start our 3 night, 4 day wilderness fishing expedition.

Day 8
Fish, float and camp on the Collon Cura River.

Day 9
Fish, float and camp on the Collon Cura River.

Day 10
We’ll depart the river about 5:00pm and drive 2 hours back to our hotel in Bariloche.

Day 11
Drive 10 minutes to the Bariloche Airport for departure flight to Puerto Montt Chile or to Buenos Aires.

Day 6
After an early breakfast and check out, we’ll motor 10 minutes down the Puelo River to our van and begin our journey over the Andes to Estancia San Huberto in Junin, Argentina.  We should arrive in time to fish for a few hours before dark.

Day 7
We’ll start fishing the upper section of the Malleo River and work our way upriver towards the Tromen Lake.  The river is faster here and streamers and nymphs can help entice the Malleo’s biggest browns out from behind submerged boulders.

Day 8
Today we’ll fish the middle to upper sections which are slower and easier to fish.  Anglers will quickly see why this is Patagonia’s finest dry fly river.

Day 9
Anglers have the choice to either fish a different section of the Malleo or go after some of the massive rainbows on Tromen Lake.

Day 10
Departure flight out of San Martin or Bariloche.
